Burt Lum is an American technology professional and radio host based in Hawaiʻi. He is the Broadband Strategy Officer for the State of Hawaiʻi, where he works on broadband infrastructure and digital equity initiatives. Lum is also the founder and host of Bytemarks Café, a weekly science and technology program on Hawaii Public Radio.[1]

Lum has been profiled by regional business and news outlets for his role in Hawaiʻi’s broadband policy and technology planning. In a 2022 interview with Pacific Business News, he discussed efforts to expand broadband access and address the digital divide in the state.[2] He was previously interviewed by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser regarding Hawaiʻi’s broadband strategy and the role of digital infrastructure in the state’s economy.[3]

Career

Lum began working in telecommunications in Hawaiʻi during the early period of commercial internet development. He worked for GTE Hawaiian Telephone (now Hawaiian Telcom) and later held technology roles with organizations including the Hawaii Medical Service Association.[3]

From 1998 to 2004, Lum wrote a weekly technology column for The Honolulu Advertiser.[3]

In 2008, he launched Bytemarks Café on Hawaii Public Radio. The program focuses on science and technology issues in Hawaiʻi and regularly features guests from local universities, businesses, and community organizations.[1]

In 2018, Lum joined the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. He was later appointed Broadband Strategy Officer for the Hawaii Broadband & Digital Equity Office, where his work has included broadband planning and public outreach related to the state’s Digital Equity Plan.[2][4]

Awards and recognition

In 2023, radio station KWXX reported that Lum received multiple awards recognizing his work on broadband coordination and digital equity initiatives in Hawaiʻi.[5]
