The 4th Division (4e Divisie) was a major infantry formation of the Royal Netherlands Army. Established in 1905, it is best known for its defense of the southern sector of the Grebbe Line during the German invasion in May 1940.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]- 1905–1939: Established as part of the army reorganization. During World War I, it served as a strategic reserve around Amersfoort.[2]
- 1940: Subordinated to II Army Corps under Major General C. H. van den Heuvel. The division fought the pivotal Battle of the Grebbeberg before the Dutch surrender on 14 May.[3]
- Cold War: Re-established in 1953 and based in **Harderwijk**. It served as a mechanized formation within the 1st Army Corps for NATO defense until its deactivation in 1994.[1]
Order of Battle (May 1940)
[edit | edit source]On 10 May 1940, the division's major units included:[4][3]
- Infantry: 8th Infantry Regiment (8 RI), 19th Infantry Regiment (19 RI), and 1st Battalion of the 11th Infantry Regiment (1/11 RI).
- Artillery: 4th Artillery Regiment (4 RA), supported by parts of 8 RA and 12 RA.
- Cavalry: 4th Half Regiment Hussars (4e Halfregiment Huzaren).
