1 Granary is an independent fashion media platform and magazine founded in 2012 by Olya Kuryshchuk. Based in London, it publishes print and online content on fashion education and emerging designers. The platform began as a student-led blog at Central Saint Martins (CSM) and has since developed into a publication and network connecting fashion schools, graduates, and industry professionals.
History
[edit | edit source]- Origins (2011–2012): Kuryshchuk founded the site while studying at Central Saint Martins in 2011, together with fellow students, as a blog intended to share information among peers within the fashion course.[1] The name 1 Granary refers to the address of CSM’s Granary Square campus in King’s Cross, London.[2]
- First print issue (2012–2013): The project expanded from an online platform to print in 2012–13. The first issue, produced with limited resources and printed in about 1,000 copies, featured contributions from CSM students and alumni and received support from Comme des Garçons.[3]
- Expansion: In subsequent years 1 Granary broadened its coverage to include interviews, editorial photography, and essays. It began collaborating with fashion and art schools such as the Royal College of Art, Parsons, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Institut Français de la Mode, and Polimoda.Alongside publishing, it organised exhibitions, panel discussions, and other projects related to graduate fashion.[4]
Activities & Programs
[edit | edit source]- Publishing: Since 2012 the magazine has produced seven print editions, released intermittently. Its digital output has grown through a Substack-based publication focusing on critical essays, interviews, and commentary on the fashion system.[5] The website continues to publish graduate profiles and long-form features.
- Designers to Hire: Launched in 2020, Designers to Hire is an online directory presenting work by fashion-school graduates worldwide. The database provides portfolios and background information intended for prospective employers and collaborators.[6]
- VOID initiative: Introduced in 2018, the VOID project comprises exhibitions and mentorship initiatives centred on recent graduates. It has been presented in cities such as London and Paris and has featured collaborations with a range of institutions.[7]
Editorial Style & Themes
[edit | edit source]The magazine’s editorial tone has been described as candid and documentary, focusing on structural issues in fashion education and employment. Coverage often addresses the financial and institutional pressures facing young designers and critiques the economic models of the wider fashion system.[3][8]
