"Caps" which are Bottle caps, are the preeminent currency in the Fallout series. These caps, often taken from Nuka-Cola, or from Sunset Sarsaparilla bottles (as in Fallout: New Vegas), replace modern bills- often now called "Pre-War Money" in game, and is used as a crafting material, or as a true form of currency in specific in-franchise locations as the primary form of currency. These caps are used for purchasing and sales within Fallout, with many NPC vendors having a set number to vend with.
The adoption of the currency within the Fallout Franchise is poorly documented, but has been the main form of currency in most mainline Fallout games. The exceptions to this include faction-specific currency in Fallout: New Vegas, the use of "pre-war money" in Nuka-World's Nuka-Cade, or when regarding Sunset Sarsaparilla's specific "Star Bottle Caps," which are not included in the players cap total.
