The Copa Promesas MX is a Mexican football cup competition that was established in 2024.[1]
This tournament was established to improve the sporting development of the teams in the lower categories of Mexican football and the youth teams of the top category clubs, in response to the fans' complaint about the lack of development of youth football players in Mexico. [2]
However, this project was also criticized by fans because they considered it an incomplete version of the previous Copa MX and a substitute for the lack of promotion opportunities for the clubs that are playing in the lower categories.[3]
In 2025, the cup organizers decided to divide the tournament into two categories: U–19, pitting teams from the Liga Premier against the U-19 Liga MX teams, and U–17, which includes the Liga TDP teams and the U-17 Liga MX squads.
Format
[edit | edit source]100 teams are part of the competition: The U-19 and U–17 squads that are part of the structure of the 18 Liga MX clubs, 18 teams from Liga Premier de México and 46 clubs from Liga TDP. Liga Premier and Liga TDP teams were selected by invitation.[4]
In the U–19 Cup the 36 teams are divided into nine groups of four clubs, all of them organized according to geographic location criteria. The winners of each group and the seven best second places will qualify for the final stage.[5]
In the U–17 Cup the 64 teams are divided into 16 groups of four clubs, all of them organized according to geographic location criteria. The winners of each group will qualify for the final stage.[6]
In both categories the matches will be played on the field of the lower division team. During the group stage, victories will award three points, draws one and losses zero, however, if the matches end in a tie a penalty shoot-out will be played to award an extra point.[4]
The tournament consists of five stages:[4]
- Group stage
- Round of 8
- Quarter-Finals
- Semi-Finals
- Final
Since 2025 season the cup be played during the months of September and November as a mid–week tournament for the teams of the Liga Premier and the TDP, in addition to giving play to the youth teams of the Liga MX.[1]
