Arabella Gabrielle Sims (born May 25, 2005) is an American swimmer and 2020 Olympic silver medalist.
2020 Olympics
[edit | edit source]At the 2020 United States Olympic Trials Sims finished fifth in the 200 freestyle, qualifying her for the relay team at the 2020 Olympics.[2] She was one of four high school athletes to make the United States team.[3] Entering the trials, she qualified for 11 of the 14 contested events.[4] At the Tokyo 2020 summer games (held in 2021), Sims earned a silver medal as part of the United States' Women's 4×200 m freestyle team. Although she swam in the preliminary heats of the event, her contribution helped the U.S. team advance to the final.[5]
International competition
[edit | edit source]At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest Sims swam in the preliminaries of the 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay recording a time of 1:55.91 which earned her a place in the final. The 17 year old then swam the anchor leg in the final with a split of 1:54.60 which was nearly three seconds quicker than her flat start personal best of 1:57.53. The Americans won the relay giving Sims her first gold medal in a major international championship.[6]
In March 2025, the International Testing Agency announced that Sims bore "no fault or negligence" for testing positive for hydrochlorothiazide (HTTZ) in September 2024 as her anti-inflammatory prescription medication was found to have been contaminated.[7] Therefore, she received no sanction and no results were disqualified.
