The Aali Mosque (Urdu pronunciation: [ɑːliː məsd͡ʒɪd̪] ; Kashmiri pronunciation: [əːlʲ məʃiːd̪]) is a mosque located in Srinagar, in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The mosque was built in 1395 CE by Sultan Ali Shah, the elder brother of Sultan Zain al-Abidin (Budshah), and named the mosque after himself.[1] It is also believed to have been constructed in 1471 CE during the reign of Shamiri King Sultan Hassan Shah and named after Sayyid Ali Hamadani (Shah Hamdan).[2]

Architecture

[edit | edit source]

The structure is the largest existing mosque within the premises of Eidgah Srinagar, which is also named after Sayyid Ali Hamadani. It is also the second largest mosque in the Kashmir Valley after the Jamia Masjid, also located in Srinagar.[3] The building shows a unique synthesis between Central Asian and local traditions of wooden architecture. The mosque is based on a 4 by 5 metres (13 by 16 ft) grid supported on 151 wooden columns, each 5 metres (16 ft) high and 0.95 metres (3 ft 1 in) wide. The main hall on the ground floor measures 61.2 metres (201 ft) by 20.5 metres (67 ft) and consists of 75 such modules. All 151 Deodar columns are rested on carved stone pedestals with varying designs. The overall area of the mosque is 1,844 square metres (19,850 sq ft).[4][5]
