The Chotta Bazaar massacre refers to the mass shooting of Kashmiri Muslims civilians by personnel of indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in india administered Chotta Bazaar area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir on 11 June 1991.[1][2][3]
Background
[edit | edit source]According to eyewitnesses and media reports, CRPF personnel stationed near the Government Medical College at Syed Mansoor opened indiscriminate fire into Chotta Bazaar following clashes with unknown assailants near Zainakadal, a nearby locality 3 days before. [4]
Casualties
[edit | edit source]Estimates of fatalities vary. Pakistani state sources and human rights groups report up to 32 people killed, including a 75‑year‑old woman and a 10‑year‑old child, with many more injured. Indian police records list at least 18 civilian deaths.[5]
Inquiry and Legal Proceedings
[edit | edit source]A local police case under Section 302 (murder) was registered at Karan Nagar police station immediately after the shooting. A judicial inquiry was initiated, led by Justice Mufti Jalaluddin and supported by human rights lawyer Jaleel Andrabi. The inquiry stalled following the judge’s transfer and the subsequent abduction and murder of Andrabi. No convictions followed. [6][7]
