Well all you need to do is create a white shape bigger than the "hole" and use ''Object - Lower'', ''Send backward'' or similar, (depending on software) until it is behind whatever it needs to be. For instance, in the second one I just created a white square bigger than the circle and smaller than the red square, then "lowered" it behind the red square and 'landmass'. I could alternatively have used a full size white rectangle at the very back. The image from crimemagazine.com shows the street as it was in 1971, with the right shop names etc.
