It was created in 2001 when Yoshinobu Kanemaru defeated Juventud Guerrera in a 12-man tournament final. In addition to Japan, the title has also been defended in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany. As of July 13, 2024, there have been a total of 55 reigns shared between 28 different champions. The current champion is Hiromu Takahashi, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Yo-Hey at Korakuen Hall on September 8, 2025.
