Fair use rationale for The Daily Compass

The scanned front-page image of a defunct (1949-1952) newspaper may or may not have a copyright but qualifies for fair use here for the following reasons.

  1. This is only used to denote the newspaper in question.
  2. This image on a nonprofit information site will not harm any rights-holders in commercial exploitation of its copyrights, if any, or in any other way.
  3. This image is the sole way of identifying the publication, and the image is not replaceable with a free-use image
  4. This image is of low resolution, and reproductions will be of poor quality.

This image is a scan of a newspaper page or article, and the copyright for it is most likely held by either the publisher of the newspaper or the individual contributors who worked on the articles or images depicted. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of newspaper pages
  • to illustrate either the publication of the article or issue in question,
  • with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above,
  • on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
