Description

Map of the parish of Mertoun in the south of Berwickshire. As shown by the map, it forms a salient into Roxburghshire and the only parish in its own county it borders is Earlston. The map shows the positions of Dryburgh Abbey, Bemersyde and Mertoun Kirk within the parish, as well as St.Boswells and Maxton in Roxburghshire, on the other side of the River Tweed.

Source

A small extract of a map of Berwickshire was taken, to illustrate the main features of Mertoun, then digitally enhanced to clarify these features. The base map is in "New Statistical Account of Scotland,Vol.2 Linlithgow-Haddington-Berwick", publ Blackwood,Edinburgh,1845 (non-copyright)
