Title
Dutch Bricks
Description

The local Topsham brick was not of very good quality and particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries, imported Dutch bricks (sometimes referred to as “clinkers” were used for the finer details such as fireplaces, chimneystacks and chimney shafts.
These distinctive bricks are smaller than usual and can be either red or yellow. They can be seen in many buildings in Topsham and are sometimes used in boundary walls.

The Exeter Port Books record thousands of these small bricks being imported between c. 1660-1710.
