AF Global Football is a football development organisation that operates in the United Kingdom and Spain. It partners with schools and universities to run full-time football programmes alongside formal academic study for student-athletes aged approximately 7 to 18 and above.[1][2] The organisation was co-founded by former professional footballer Matthew Rose, who serves as its chief operating officer, and Greg Thurstans.[3]
Overview
[edit | edit source]AF Global Football operates as a football development provider rather than as a standalone club or academy. Its staff are embedded within Independent partner schools and higher-education institutions, where they deliver football training and player-development support on site.[4] Academic teaching, examinations and qualifications remain the responsibility of the host institutions, while AF Global Football supplies licensed coaches, technical staff and performance systems.[5]
The organisation’s programmes are designed so that football training schedules are coordinated with academic timetables. Training sessions are arranged to avoid clashes with classroom commitments, with the aim of allowing participants to follow an integrated "dual-pathway" that combines education and football development.[4]
AF Global Football works with school-age and youth players and delivers term-time training as part of each institution’s wider extracurricular and talent-development structure. The programmes are intended to operate as a permanent part of the partner institutions rather than as short-term holiday camps.[2]
Model and programmes
[edit | edit source]Integration with educational institutions
[edit | edit source]AF Global Football partners with independent schools and universities in the United Kingdom and Spain to deliver football training on their campuses.[4][5] Partner institutions provide academic curricula such as GCSEs, A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, BTECs and university degrees, while AF Global Football oversees the football-specific aspects of the programmes, including coaching and player monitoring.[4]
Across different locations the organisation uses a broadly standardised football curriculum in order to maintain consistent approaches to welfare, training methods and performance analysis.[2]
Coaching and performance analysis
[edit | edit source]Training within AF Global Football programmes is delivered by UEFA-qualified coaches.[4] Sessions are supported by the use of video analysis and other performance data to track player development over time.[2] The approach has been described as similar in structure to systems used in professional academies in the United Kingdom and continental Europe, although AF Global Football is not affiliated with any specific professional club.[5]
Scouting and exposure
[edit | edit source]The organisation arranges fixtures, showcase games and trial events intended to provide exposure to scouts from domestic and international clubs.[4][5] In some cases, players have obtained scholarship places or invitations to trial environments after taking part in AF Global Football programmes.[2] Scholarship initiatives linked to professional players, including named awards associated with high-profile athletes, have also been run through its events and partnerships.[6]
Partnerships and recognition
[edit | edit source]AF Global Football has been profiled by external sports-performance and psychology organisations that describe its role as a partner to accredited educational institutions and its use of integrated training and analysis programmes.[2][4] It has been included among the partners of football-related companies and has been involved in collaborative initiatives focused on performance analysis and mental-skills development.[7]
Scholarship programmes associated with AF Global Football have included collaborations with professional players, including a girls’ scholarship launched in partnership with England international Lucy Bronze.[8]
